MESSAGES

  • As we returned all the children’s items becfore the holidays to enable us to clean their cubbies, please remember to send in extra changes of warm clothes, any nappies that are needed as well as their bedding.
  • In our classrooms we will be learning about some new animal friends who will help us to be our best, such as ‘Persevering Parrots’, ‘Trying Turtles’ and ‘Proud Peacocks’. Watch this space to hear more about them.

FOXES AND PANTHERS

During this cold week at school, some of the children have found ice in the playground. They have shown a lot of interest in the ice and had a lot of discussion about how it got there and what makes it disappear. We will extend this with the children by having some polar animals frozen in an ice block on Monday morning to generate discussions about where these animals have come from and how we can get them out of the ice. We will talk to the children about how they should dress in such cold weather and compare this to how they would dress in hot, summer weather. The children will have the opportunity to design their own winter outfit using a variety of fabrics and materials.

In Maths, we will use Numicon (counting resource) with the children to explore what number each Numicon piece represents. We will extend this further by ordering the pieces in the correct order based on their number value.

In Mandarin, the children will sort summer and winter clothing. They will also make ice lollies and look at how the liquid freezes into the ice lolly.

MEETKAT AND WOLF CLASSES

Welcome back! The children have been very happy to be back in school. We have been delighted by the level of communication in English language. The winter break has given us the opportunity to reflect upon the good progress made in this area.

The children have been having a lot of fun and discovery with the ice outside in the mornings. We have been learning new words including ice, melting, freezing and slippery. We will extend this by putting containers of coloured water outside overnight to see if change occurs. We will be discussing ways of measuring and temperatures and include mathematical language such as higher and lower.

All of the Teachers and learning assistants have had further training this week on teaching phonics and letter formation. This has come at an exciting time as the both classes are introducing written name labels for the children to copy. We are positive the children will be sharing ‘ditties’ that support letter formation at home. We will be sharing these with you through the weekly news  as and when we introduce each letter. Please remember that we introduce the phonetic sound of each letter before we introduce letter names. Please see an introduction to Read, Write, Inc lesson found on Youtube below.

For role play the children have been playing in the Chinese restaurant we have set up to prepare for our Chinese New Year celebrations. The children will be exploring Chinese script, using chop sticks and looking at menus and writing orders. We will be talking about the upcoming Year of the Dog and discussing celebrations of our own and other cultures.

The children have been excited about the story of the Gingerbread Man. We will be making gingerbread people during cooking and art. In the coming weeks we will make a class book with the children where they will contribute to the illustrations and script.
