Week Beginning 24 October 2016

Monday 24 October we will hold the hearing screening.

  • If your child has an afternoon nap you are welcome to send in personal bedding for your child.  Do remember to name all items. We will keep them in school during the week and send home on a Friday.
  • As the weather is beginning to change please make sure your child comes to school with suitable named outdoor clothes;  a raincoat with a hood and rain boots, which they can change into to go outside when it is wet. Please label all items with your child’s name!
  • This week we welcome a new child in the Meerkats’s class. His name is Enoch. His family are from Hong Kong.

There has been a lot of excitement around the stories of “The Three Billy Goats Gruff” and “Jack and the Beanstalk”. The children have been joining in the the rhyme and repetition  of the key phrases. It has very positive to hear that the children have been going home and re-telling the stories they have shared in their class with parents. Please see the link below to  continue to stimulate children’s interest in this traditional story.

To support and extend the children’s thinking and understanding about the purpose of our Tanzania Day Celebrations last week we  introduced the story of “Handa’s Surprise” by Helen Brown. The children have also been exploring and investigating fruits. Please view the video and talk about the similarities and differences the children notice in the pictures when comparing them to where we live.

We want to get children talking in large and small groups and in more formal group settings. To do this we would love it if parents could send in photos or notes in the communication books of the events and experiences  that happened at the weekend. This will enable teachers to prompt children and extend their re-call skills while making home and school links.

Yesterday, we, I went, with, fun, exciting

The children’s mark making skills have been extended through role play; they have been having fun completing forms, making menus and writing their names. Please ensure all children have access to paper and pens at home. A great way to get children interested in writing at home is to have a roleplay office set up with note pads, diaries and calenders.

The children have been making great use of the monkey bars. By developing gross motor skills research has shown the children become risk takers in all areas of their lives and it also builds up muscle strength needed for  skills such as writing.

There has been some great investigations going on to discover more about wheels and how they work. What makes them move and go fast and slow? What needs to happen for wheels to change directions?

Fast, slow, zoom, up, down

The wonderful thing about dressing up and using your imagination is you can be who and whatever you want to be. Last week we had excellent turn taking, co-operation and negotiation throughout the Nursery as the children were deeply involved in rather sophisticated role-play. What fun!
