Week Beginning 6 February 2017

  • Welcome back. WE hope you all have had a wonderful new year!

One more starting point for us this week will be the story ‘Whatever next’ By Jill Murphy. This is a wonderful story of a bear’s adventure to the moon. Why not watch the video with your child (if you have the book, even better) and talk about how you would get to the moon. What could you use in your house to build a rocket?

The children have also shown a lot of interest in writing their own name and are practising this each morning when they arrive in school.

During our Chinese New Year celebrations we talked about the different foods we ate. The children made dumplings from playdough which we developed into a shop. We will continue to set up our playdough food shop; however, the children have decided to change it from dumplings to cupcakes! If you have any cupcake holders you don’t need we would love them for our shop!

Another big development in our Fox Cub class is our role play area. Lots of the children showed a real fascination with Star Wars and acted out these different roles in class. To harness this passion for space, we created a spaceship and space writing area. How will you fly to the moon?

Space, rocket, moon, fly, planets, shop, food, cupcakes, money, How much is it? Dumplings, roll, cupcakes

Through our Chinese New Year celebrations we have been learning about the customs of our own and our host countries. The children have really enjoyed making rooster costumes for the Senior Mangagement team to wear on our ‘Red Day’.

The children have been working on counting to twenty and we will now focus on counting back down from ten and twenty. We will sing lots of number songs to reinforce this.

Numbers, forwards, backwards, higher, lower

Na al dat stoere riddergeweld nemen deze week de prinsessen het kasteel over.  We maken kennis met het sprookje `De prinses op de erwt` en praten over wat het inhoudt om een echte prinses te zijn.

In Mandarin the children will begin a theme of food and talk about what we like to eat. As it is the landern festival on 11 February we will talk about the foods we eat during this holiday, in particualar sweet dumpling (tang yuan).  To follow this theme the children will make their own sweet dumplings. Why dont you try this at home?

2 cup glutinous rice powder

1/4 cup boiling water

2 tablespoons cold water

In a bowl, combine the glutinous rice powder with both boiling water and cold water and mix well. Knead mixture into a small dough. Shape the dough into a roll about 2 inches in diameter and cut into four pieces. Shape each piece, about ½-inch wide. Roll each piece of dough into a small ball. Sprinkle the balls with dry rice powder and roll them gently (makes about 30 dumplings).

In a pot, add dumplings to boiling water. When they float to the top, pour in 1 cup of cold water and wait for it to boil again. Repeat one more time. Drain dumplings and rinse thoroughly in cold, running water. Add dumplings to your favorite soup filled with vegetables such as shredded daikon, black mushrooms, and napa cabbage.

Serve hot and enjoy!
