Week Beginning 9 October 2017

  • Some of our swimmers are not always prepared for our Tuesday swimming lessons, please ensure your little swimmer has their swim suit, hat, goggles and towel.
  • Please ensure that your child has the appropriate clothing for outdoors, as we like to enjoy this space in all seasons!  e.g. come in raincoat and boots when the weather is wet.
  • Please remember we are a nut free school, this means you may not send any nut products at all to school at any time, this includes Nutella, snack bars that contain nuts, nut butters, nut oils or nuts.
  • For the safety of all the children, please ensure the small gate is closed as you come in and out every morning.  This is the indoor gate in the corridor as you approach the pre-nursery area.
  • We are looking for parents who are able to volunteer their time to help with our Early Years Library. This would include keeping the books in order, scanning books in and out, reading to children, demonstrating book care and making the book area looking inviting. Please email Liz Peacock ( if you would like to volunteer.
  • After the holidays we will begin to create a music wall outside form recycled materials.  If you have old pots, pans, metal spoons, or any other kitchen utensils that you are no longer using, we would gladly accept them.
  • Who are you? Who lives at your house? We will shortly begin a topic around our families, and ask if you could please send in or email a photo of your family and the people and/or pets that live in your home.

Each teacher will plan learning experiences that link to the readiness and interests that they observe in the children in their class.  While these separate themes operate in each room, the children know they are free to choose to work in another room.  The planning is specific to each classroom, but not confined to that class, so children have many rich opportunities available to them across the three classrooms.  Mandarin teaching will link into each theme, with the Mandarin speaking staff introducing specific language, books and songs.

Our colour focus has led to lots of learning and exploration. We will continue this for another week, focusing more on colour mixing. The children will have opportunities to explore what happens when they mix colours together, using the art resources as well as their hands for a more sensory experience. Working with colour has also lead into learning by sorting objects, which is a meaningful link to our Maths curriculum.

During  Mandarin  we  will  talk  about  different colours.

We will sing a colour  Song yan  se  ge/颜色歌 and listen to the story: the colourful crows/彩色的乌鸦.

As part of our learning about textures, the children have also been exploring colours. We will continue working on textures, adding in extra learning about colours. The Badgers will be mixing colours and using different materials to paint with.

“Little  Mouse learns  to paint”/xiao  lao  shu  xue  hua  hua/小老鼠学画画

The Tiger Cubs have been fascinated by making enclosures for the dinosaurs using sticks and stones to create different shapes.  We will add a range of natural objects to create interest in making triangles, squres and circles and learning the names of the shapes in English.

They have also been showing interest in large scale painting using the  easel so we will encourage them to use their gross motor skills to paint using large circular movements. In addition, we will be learning how to use scissors safely and making attempts at cutting along lines and advancing to cutting out shapes.

We will  extend our interest in shapes into our Mandarin activity.  We will learn the names of the shapes, and use this to select and  identify the different shapes. We will also play a shape game using a feely bag, feeling and guessing the shape we have chosen.
