  • 'Farmer Duck’ by Martin Waddell

  • We are running the HSK examination on Saturday 12th November 2016. Registration is open to students, parents and friends who have an interest in taking this test. For more information, please kindly refer to the letter.
  • Reading books should be returned to school daily so that the children can also read in school and it is important that you tick the children’s communication books when they read at home.
  • As the weather is beginning to change please make sure your child comes to school with suitable named outdoor clothes;  a raincoat with a hood and rain boots, which they can change into to go outside when it is wet. Please label all items with your child’s name!
  • Spare clothes: please remember that accidents do happen and it is very helpful to keep a spare set of named clothes in your childs cubby basket. Please include socks!

The children have been great at recognising the qualities of good friendships and we will continue to work with them to develop our class rules and ensure that all the children understand the expectations for behaviour toward one another in our setting. We will focus on team work this week, not just working with special friends. In particular we will look at the jobs that need to be done to make our classes happy, safe, exciting and organised places for everyone to play and learn. We will we asking the children to take on responsibilities in their classes to really make our teams work.

PSED - Self-confidence & self-awareness

  • Enjoys responsibility of carrying out small tasks.

PSED - Managing feelings & behaviour

  • Understands that own actions affect other people

We will read the wonderful team work story, ‘Farmer Duck’ by Martin Waddell.

It tells of a lazy farmer who refuses to help on the farm, leaving a hard working duck to do all the work, until the duck’s friends decided to teach the lazy farmer a lesson and help him on the farm. We will be talking about the sequence of the story and acting out parts of  it in groups.

Team work, help, helpful, lazy, together, job, responsible.

Development Outcomes

Communication & Language: Speaking

Use language to imagine and recreate roles and experiences in play situations.

Expressive Arts & Design: Being imaginative

Play cooperatively as part of a group to develop and act out a narrative.

We will continue to play some simple phonics games with the children to develop their listening skills and review sounds taught so far: s, a, t, p, i, n. We are beginning to blend these sounds together read and build simple words e.g  at, pin, tap, sit.

Children will also be introduced to the next set of sounds m, d, and g. We will be looking at words with these sounds in, e.g dig, mat, pig, p.

We will continue working on our counting each day and our focus will be on recognising simple 2D shapes. The children will be invited to use shapes and talk about their features; number of sides and corners, during focus teaching and through the continuous provision – singing songs about shapes, creating shape pictures and playing games with shapes. We will take the children on a shape hunt to see if they can recognise shapes in their environments.

Circle, square, rectangle, triangle, oval, hexagon, 2D, flat

Development Outcomes

  • Begin to use mathematical names for ‘ ‘flat’ 2D shapes, and mathematical terms to describe shapes.
  • Select a particular named shape.
