Week Beginning 10 October 2016

  • Homework will be given out on Wednesdays and expected in on Mondays.
  • Please ensure that your child has the correct school uniform. In particular please ensure your child is wearing black shoes. Girls should wear plain white socks and boys should wear black or grey socks. You can review the school’s uniform policy here.
  • Please remember to send in and label your child’s snack box and water bottle, as well as a hat during the hot weather.
  • If for any reason your child is unable to take part in PE, please send a signed message in your child’s communication book.  Your child still needs to bring in their PE kit to enable them to participate as a coach, an official or to give feedback.

This week in Literacy the children are starting a brand new genre of writing - myths. It will begin with the children using picture clues to build up their knowledge of this type of text. They will debate on who are the heroes and villains, which are the mythical creatures, where are the stories set and what problem are they trying to solve. They will then be immersed, through cartoon strips, into three Greek myths, identifying these same features. They will end the week with an opportunity to write their own version of either Pandora's Box, Perseus and Medusa and Hercules.

Villain, hero, mythical creature, setting, plot, journey, quest, problem, solution

In Maths this week the children will be exploring the concept of multiplication. Not only will they have ample opportunities to practice their quick recall of various times tables, they will also consolidate their understanding of what multiplication actually means. This will be reinforced with repeated addition as well as using arrays. The children will also start column multiplication, multiplying a TU X U. Some will explore this using a partitioning method:

14 X 2 is

10 X 2= 20 and 4 X 2= 8 therefore the answer is 28.

Times table, multiple, array, repeated addition, partition, 2 digit number, 3 digit number, hundred, ten, unit

This week will see the children explore extinction theories. They will be presented with 3 different theories and use their computing skills to create a poster with the key facts. We will be using a 'marketplace' activity, which involves one child from the group presenting their theory to members of groups. Each child that has listened to a different theory then has to go and feedback to the presenter.

Extinction, theory, scientist, meteor, asteroid, disease

For the past 6 weeks the children have been practising their typing and publishing skills. This week they will get to put these skills to test by designing and creating their own poster to present their extinction theory. They will use skills such as: changing the font, inserting word art and images and creating borders.

Keyboard, font, insert, image, WordArt, document, file, border, home row keys

The focus this week will be on listening to others, responding appropriately and sharing ideas. These skills will be delivers and practiced through our Themed Learning, where the children will be working in groups to collate information, present and feedback.

Collaborate, active listening, share, respond, appropriate, positive, specific, feedback
