LITERACY

The children have been doing a great job already with their instruction writing and particularly with using imperative verbs. This week we will be linking our literacy and topic lessons as the children learn about the gruesome methods the Ancient Egyptians used during the mummification process. They will then be writing this up as an instructional text and learning how to annotate diagrams. There is a lot of new vocabulary in this topic so do try and talk to your child about it!

KEY VOCABULARY

Imperative verbs list: insert, cut, pull, remove, place, rinse, cover, stuff, wrap, hook, lay

Technical vocabulary list: Ibu, brain, stomach, internal organs, lungs, intestines, stomach, liver, Canopic jars, heart, spices, corpse, natron, linen bandages, priest, sarcophagus

MATHS

This week, we will be recapping on our addition and subtraction basic skills, moving onto problem-solving using column addition.  To help prepare students for their upcoming lessons, you might like to practise using column methods for both addition and subtraction, especially focusing on carrying and exchanging. Many children will be consolidating and extending their knowledge and understanding of column addition and subtraction and will be adding 2 and 3 digit numbers to a hundred number i.e. 268 + 35 = and 345 + 215=. They will be looking at methods for carrying. They will also be subtracting 2 and 3 digit numbers from a hundred number i.e. 457 – 214 =, with some examples borrowing from the tens and hundred i.e. 277 – 118 = or 707 – 149 =. The children will also be answering word problems and applying their knowledge of addition and subtraction.

KEY VOCABULARY

Column, addition, add, altogether, subtract, subtraction, difference, more, less than

THEME

A World Wonder – Egypt. Children will look in detail at Ancient Egyptian society and the social scale. They will begin by being introduced to the role of the Pharaoh, before finding out more about other roles that people held in the Ancient Egyptian society and placing them on a hierarchical pyramid. They will study pictures of artefacts and try to establish which members of society they would have belonged to and consider what those objects tell us about how the Ancient Egyptians lived. The children will then undertake a design and technology project to create a 2D social scale information pyramid.

KEY VOCABULARY

Ancient, Egyptian, society, social scale, role, Pharaoh, priest, officials, scribe, merchant, craftsman, peasant, slave

COMPUTING

Children will continue to study internet safety, focusing on safe use of social media. They will consider which information it is safe to share online, what the potential threats are and what to do if they feel unsafe.

KEY VOCABULARY

Online, chat group, social media, appropriate, safety, stranger, avatar, sharing, gaming, bullying

PSHCE

This term our new PSHCE / well-being program will begin.  The first core value covered is collaboration.  This is the ability to work constructively with others, and children will learn to negotiate, to resolve conflicts, and to support agreed solutions. In doing so, they will strengthen their sense of teamwork and realise where they lack certain skills; which they can later hone.

KEY VOCABULARY

Collaboration, groups, teamwork, skills
