Week Beginning 23 January 2017

Thursday 26 January will be the annual ‘Wear Red Day’ for the Chinese New Year celebration.  There will also be a Dragon dance at approximately 8:30am (once buses have arrived). Parents are welcome to watch.

  • We do our best to ensure the children’s hair is dried after swimming. To support us with this please can you make sure that your child brings a rubber swim hat, and a warm hat for outside play. Thank you for your continued support  with this.
  • Now the weather is beginning to get colder, please send your child with a coat and/or school fleece clearly labelled with their name.  Please do not send ‘hoodies’.  Children may also like to bring a hat to keep their head warm, especially after swimming.
  • Lost Property -Our lost property cupboard is full to over flowing.  Next week on Tuesday and Wednesday items from the cupboard will be laid out on tables in the front playground.  Please encourage your child to see if they recognise any clothes or objects; if you can please come yourself to check claim items.  We will be re-cycling anything unclaimed over Chinese New Year.
  • New Parents –KS1 &KS2 Themed Learning and Science workshop on 26 January in Stage One

This week in Literacy, we will be building on our research from last week. Our focus will be to finish planning our biographies about our key artists, before writing paragraphs using a range of openers, connectives and punctuation to involve the reader. By the end of the week the children will have produced a final version of their biography, in a form of their choice.

Title, introduction, subtitle, paragraph, photograph, diagram, label, caption, opener, interestingly, amazingly, did you know...?

In Maths, the children will be applying their addition and subtraction knowledge from last week to solve problems. As well as developing strategies to solve mathematical problems, the children may use estimating and the inverse to help them to check their answers. By tackling addition and subtraction problems, the children will increase their confidence in using a range of written methods.

Number, calculation, addition, plus, altogether, total, add, subtraction, subtract, minus, take away, left over, difference, estimate, check, inverse, operation, reverse

In Themed Learning the focus will remain on Art. This week the children will focus on learning a key art technique and use this to create their own paintings in the style of Seurat or Klee. With Seurat the children will experiment and investigate with the technique of Pointillism and then use their own landscape photography to create a painting using dots. Klee made use of geometric shapes and children learning this skill will focus on "taking a pencil for a walk" and filling in the spaces with watercolours.

Pointillism, dots, geometric, shapes, technique, skill, mixing, primary colour, secondary colour, line, shape, space

In Digital Literacy we will continue to look at keeping safe on the Internet and carrying out safe searching for information. Over the following few weeks there will a more in depth look at how to search effectively for information, choose the best information to meet their research needs, and cut and paste this into their work.

Safe, search, search engine, protection

Our focus this week in PHSCE will be to look at giving feedback. This will link directly to the development of our art skills, where the children will evaluate what is going well and giving, helpful and specific feedback to each other to help improve our work.
