Luke Dominic Thompson

Luke Thompson

Head of English

Originally from Manchester, Luke moved to study English Literature at the University of Sheffield in 2007, earning a 2:1 with honours. Following this, Luke decided to move to Keele University in order to complete a PGCE in English, graduating in 2012. Keen to remain in the West Midlands area, Luke secured a position at an outstanding Academy, where he has worked for the previous four years, gaining a wealth of experience teaching students of many different abilities.

The combined lure of further developing his teaching practice in a new, stimulating environment and the chance to live in a truly global, fascinating metropolis is what led to Luke applying for the position at BISS Puxi. Luke strongly believes in the value of Literature as a useful tool which not only develops and consolidates language skills, but allows students to access modern, relevant ideas about relationships and identity. His primary motivation as a teacher is to help inspire young people to become aware of themselves and the world around them, fulfilling their academic potential in the process.

If there is one thing that Luke will miss due to living in Shanghai, it will be watching his beloved Manchester City play live. Luke also has the challenging ambition to visit every European country in the next few years; 22 down, 19 to go! Attending music festivals and concerts is something that Luke always finds time to do, as is playing any board game that is available, from Monopoly to chess. In terms of literature, Luke has a particular interest in writing of Irish and Russian origin, especially Joyce and Dostoevsky, and a corresponding enthusiasm for the history of those two countries.
