    Head of Global Languages

    Fiona McConnon

    Fiona McConnon graduated from University College London (UCL) with an honours degree in French and from York University with a PGCE in French and sport. She subsequently taught English at a University in Lanzhou with Voluntary Service Overseas for two years, where she became fascinated by Mandarin. This led to her spending five years mainly in Beijing as a British Council – Chinese government scholar at the Beijing Languages Institute, completing a Master's of Teaching of Chinese as a Foreign Language.

    Head of Secondary EAL

    Maria Pantasoulas

    Maria gained a BA (Hons) in English Language and Literature and then went on to obtain a Master's Degree in Education with a distinction from the University of Nottingham, where she also completed her PGCE. She has over fifteen years of experience teaching English both as a foreign and additional language. She joined BISS after teaching in international schools in Korea and elsewhere in China.

    James Penton

    BSc (Hons), PGCE

    James studied Politics and International Relations at Southampton University before taking a CELTA qualification course. He then moved to China to teach EAL to students of various ages and abilities. James then took his PGCEi and began working in a bilingual school, teaching GCSE English as a Second Language, GCSE English Language and IELTS preparatory courses. Now with over ten years of EAL teaching experience in China, James is delighted to be teaching at BISS Puxi.

    Alexander graduated with a First Class Honours Degree in Modern Languages with distinction in spoken Spanish from the University of Exeter. After completing an MA in Spanish and Latin American Studies at King’s College, London, followed by a PhD in Spanish History at the University of Exeter, he undertook a PGCE in Modern Languages (Spanish and French) at the University of Cambridge.

    Emma Diaz Fernandez

    BA in English Studies, BA in Hispanic Studies, PGCE

    Born in the North West of Spain, Emma has always loved languages and started her career learning English as a foreign language, and Spanish language and literature. As a student of Hispanic Studies, a gap year from the University of Salamanca took her to Birmingham in the UK, where she was fortunate enough to combine her passion for her mother tongue with a proper immersion in the English language and literature; experiencing the culture first hand. After finishing her degree, Emma completed her PGCE in Modern Languages in Gloucestershire and started her teaching career at Cheltenham Ladies’College , where she worked as a teacher of Spanish and Head of the Spanish Department. Emma is an IB examiner for Language B and has enjoyed taking part in publishing textbooks for students learning Spanish at all levels, both as an author and as an academic editor. In 2018, Emma decided to start a new adventure and moved  to Singapore where she worked for three years until her move to BISS.

    Irene studied French Philology and English Philology at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and spent a year in Paris, studying language and literature at Université de Versailles Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines. During her studies, Irene started her training in values-based education while volunteering with a local children's organisation. She then completed a Master’s Degree in Secondary Teacher Training, specialising in Foreign Languages at the Universitat de Barcelona. She was clear in her goal of becoming a teacher; it had always been her vocation.

    Lisa Cavanagh

    Deputy Headteacher of Whole School and German Teacher

    Lisa Cavanagh

    Lisa studied German with International Studies at Warwick University from 1991-1995. She then took a year out and completed her CTEFLA certificate for EAL and taught children in EAL schools in Oxfordshire. She then found herself working in retail management for two years, but felt that her heart lay in teaching and so returned to Warwick to complete her PGCE.
