Carli Chapman

PE Teacher

Carli attended the University of Teeside where she completed a BSc in Sport and Exercise Science. After finishing her degree, she started work as a teacher of A Level Physical Education, BTEC Sport and Public Services at Middlesbrough College, gaining valuable experience. The following year, Carli worked at English Martyrs School where she gained her QTS. Early on in her career, she had responsibility within both the academic and the pastoral side of education after taking on the role of Deputy Head of Year, whilst being responsible for the delivery and implementation of A Level Physical Education. In 2011, her pathway changed slightly as she became Second in Department, and then, Head of Department in 2018.

Carli believes that nurturing a love of a variety of sports from an early age rather than early specialisation to be key to a student’s overall ability and enjoyment. Her philosophy in teaching is to inspire and motivate students – from those who may not enjoy sport as much as others, to those who are already demonstrating talent and enthusiasm. Making lessons fun and engaging with AfL at the core of planning and evaluation have meant that she has been able to enthuse students and allow them to attain well at the same time. Physical Education as a means to learn life skills is also paramount to her philosophy – from determination to communication, to courage and resilience. Students should always be encouraged to find a way to apply at least some of these skills beyond their P.E lessons and the realms of their school life.

Carli has a keen interest in a variety of sports and has played badminton to county level, and netball and vollleyball to club level. After only recently retiring from competitive sport, she still maintains her fitness through running, completing a number of half marathons, and more recently, cycling. Carli has two children who are also involved in sport, and much of her time is also spent supporting them in their activities including netball, golf and football. She loves time with her family and friends, and any spare hours she has are spent with them.
