Be Ambitious is the Nord Anglia philosophy and is at the heart of everything we do on a daily basis. We are also fortunate to live in a country that often redefines what the word 'ambitious' means. The growth of the nation in its 48-year history has seen the UAE transform into a major financial, cultural and tourist hub across the World. The country is redefining what is possible, this is clearly demonstrated in its ever changing landscape and how it redefines the challenging environment in which we all live. As I pass through Abu Dhabi airport numerous times each year, I often reflect on the vision of Sheikh Zayed in shaping the country into what it is today and have often stopped and paused at one of the images on the walls of the airport, a huge painting of an Emirati in space which often made me smile.

Last week, quite rightly so, the whole country smiled as Major Hazza Al Mansouri returned from his first space mission becoming the first every Emirati to travel into space. Travelling at 17,500km per hour through space and covering a journey of 5 million kilometres over 8 days, Major Al Mansouri captured the imagination of this proud nation carrying out valuable scientific experiments and inspiring a wave of interest in science, particularly amongst children and students. It was only two years ago that the UAE set itself the target of having an Emirati astronaut as part of the research team based at the International Space Station and is the first part of a much larger strategic vision for the country’s ambitions in space. The next step on this ambitious adventure will see a probe launched by the UAE arriving in Mars in 2021 further supporting Sheikh Zayed’s ambitions and dreams. Let’s all keep setting ourselves ambitious challenges and reaching for the stars because all of us are always capable of so much more.
