The eyes of the World are yet again focused on the UAE as the country hosts the historic visit by His Holiness Pope Francis. This is the first ever visit by a Pontiff to the Arabian Peninsula and clearly supports the Year of Tolerance which 2019 has been designated as.
To coincide with this historic visit, I was fortunate enough to represent our school at the British Embassy on Monday for the launch of a book celebrating the country’s diversity. Hosted by the British Ambassador, the book by Reverend Cannon Andy Thompson MBE – Celebrating Tolerance: Religious Diversity in the United Arab Emirates – will be gifted to the Pope by the UAE Minister of Tolerance, Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, during an interfaith ceremony at the Founders Memorial.
Sheikh Nahyan also wrote the foreword to the book which features a chapter on each practicing religion in the UAE, including Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, Sikhism, and various Christian faiths. In a notable development, the book is also the first to recognise the UAE’s Jewish community.
We are delighted to have Father Andy as a member of our School Advisory Board and congratulate him in helping to promote tolerance and understanding throughout all of the communities who have settled in the UAE. His Highness Sheikh
Mohammed Moody said, “We need to study, teach and practice tolerance and to install it in our children, both throughout education and our own example.” Wise words indeed that we should all reflect upon.
