This year, we will continue to share staff profiles to get to know members of our school family a little better. Each week we will feature a member of staff across all areas of the school including teachers, admin staff, support staff and more. Our profile this week is Oushu Lin, our Primary School Music Teacher, since January 2018:
When I was invited to share my story, I did not know where to start as I am quite a normal human being who was born in China. I attained my teaching qualification from the UK and studied for my Master’s Degree in Finland then BIS Abu Dhabi offered me the opportunity to move from the freezer to the hot pan (from Finland to Abu Dhabi), as well as being a Primary School Music Teacher.
My journey of being a teacher started from a gap year when I worked as a teaching assistant in Germany. I worked with lower primary as well as kindergarten children, and the funniest thing is we couldn’t understand each other as I don’t speak German and they didn’t speak English. If you are interested in how we managed to communicate in the end, please come for a cup of tea! I was deeply impressed by working in a culturally diverse school. This most memorable time in my life strongly inspired me to be a qualified teacher and I joined my first Nord Anglia School in China, The British School of Guangzhou (BSG).
Working in an International School does raise some questions, not only to the pupils, but myself as a teacher. I have become more aware of what music lessons can offer besides musical skills and knowledge, for example: ‘Why a child who is reluctant to talk in English is willing to sing English songs?’ ‘Why do some children tend to respond to musical triggers’ and ‘What can we embed and collaborate with classroom learning?’ Because of these questions, I applied to study Music Therapy as a Master’s Degree in Finland after three years working in China. If you are planning to travel to Finland, I might be able to help!
I am privileged to work at BIS Abu Dhabi as a member of our multicultural community. I teach FS and Primary children. Singing together with them is always the best time of my day! You will be surprised how beautiful the sounds they make are. To continue developing their love of music is always my goal. Although now, I would love to work on my skills in playing an Arabic instrument!
