A message from the Vice Principal, Mike Wolfe.

We have in recent times needed to show our resilience and adaptability in the way we work, play, learn and socialise. Our ability to respond to change can sometimes be challenging, requiring a great amount of perseverance and persistence when trying to continue as “normal” whilst seeking ways to move forward.

When we first started virtual learning in March, it was announced that students in Year 13 would no longer be sitting their IB exams leaving a substantial gap between them completing their IB course and starting university. Our teaching team decided to create a bespoke series of pre-university courses aimed at helping our IB students prepare for the important transition to university. The university courses chosen by students led to the creation of six courses offered at BIS Abu Dhabi including:

  • International Politics, Business and Economics
  • Medicine, Biochemistry and the Sciences
  • Psychology and Neurosciences
  • Graphic Design, Photography, Fine Arts
  • Maths, Engineering and Computer Science
  • European Literature and Culture Studies

Teachers prepared lessons, reading materials and held seminar style discussions designed to bridge the gap and prepare students for their first week in university. Our counsellors offered guidance on many personal issues including leaving home, moving to a new country as well as basic cookery lessons!

This innovative initiative has undoubtedly helped our students during this challenging time and this was further recognised yesterday as we learnt we had won one of the prestigious International School Awards awarded in London. It was one of only 12 awards with all the top international schools across the world being considered so we are rightly proud of this achievement.

Well done to all of our outstanding students who constantly rise to any challenges they are faced with and the teachers and parents who make our school the learning community we are all so proud of. It just goes to show, what can sometimes appear as a challenge, can often be turned into a positive learning experience.

Mike Wolfe,

Vice Principal
