For our Year 9 students, the coming weeks will be an incredibly busy and important time in their Secondary School lives, as they will be heavily involved in making decisions for their IGCSE options. This stage of secondary education is an important milestone, as students make decisions that not only have an impact on their future studies at NAISAK but also into university, as well as potential career options further in the future. For these reasons, the preparation for options choices at NAISAK is an immersive experience and will allow students the time to discuss their choices in detail, at many stages, and with advice from many different people during the process.
The first opportunity for students to tell us their thoughts has already begun, with an IGCSE options survey having been sent to all Year 9 students via Show My Homework. This allows students to begin to think about and discuss what choices they could make in January 2019.
The main options process will begin in November with each student having a personal options interview with a senior member of staff to discuss their current strengths as well as thoughts about their future at NAISAK and beyond. Students will then be given the opportunity to experience IGCSE lessons within their current subjects, as well as enjoy taster sessions in new subjects such as Business Studies, History and Psychology. More information for parents about subjects and how to support children through the IGCSE options process will be available from 14 November, at our Year 9 Parent-Teacher Meetings (PTMs). There will be an IGCSE Options Choices presentation with an opportunity for questions, an options booklet to give more detailed explanations of the courses on offer and the very important opportunity to speak to the teachers about the subjects during the meetings.
Options week, in January 2019, will see more information offered to students, this time, by our own students. The Subject Marketplace is where Year 9 students will have the opportunity to speak with students who are currently studying each option subject at IGCSE level and gain a student perspective of the benefits and challenges of each course, allowing them to be as well informed as possible before selecting the subjects they will be committing to for the next two years.
Final options choice letters, with a full explanation of this essential selection stage, will be provided to students on 20 January 2019. We will keep parents informed at every stage in between, so that you have all the information to best provide family support in these very important decisions.
