On Monday 5 June, NAISAK celebrated ‘World Environment Day’. It was an event for which Eco-buddies had been preparing for a very long time. Our Head of Eco-buddies, Anna Davis, and our Deputy Head of Eco-buddies, Kavya Amarsinghe, played a huge part in supporting the Eco-buddies get ready for this whole-school event. Here are the two leaders speaking about their experience:
It was a pleasant surprise to have this event in our name. When organising this event, we learned and developed our communication, leadership and problem-solving skills. When Mrs Singh gave us the opportunity to take the lead of the World Environment Day celebrations, we were excited and nervous as it was our first time taking the lead in such a big event. While planning the events, we encouraged other senior Eco-buddies to help the Primary Eco-buddies with their experiments. Even though we had not taken such a significant role before with the Primary Eco-buddies, they were engaged and excited to work with and alongside us. It was a real challenge to find time in-between lessons, run to the Primary wing to meet our juniors and explain to them the expectations. We had precisely five days to get prepared for the event. What surprised us was the amount of respect our juniors gave us. They were ready to listen and follow instructions. While we went around asking them questions about their experiment, their explanation made us feel proud. Our peers in Secondary School have worked equally as hard! Shesha Taylor and Fatima Imran were with us at all times, helping us out. Kumkum Parmar and Ellyca Miguel were all out preparing labels, laminating and getting ready for the event. Shonchari Subha and Arwa Hassan were the messengers for meeting time and venue. Overall, our event was extremely successful as visitors enjoyed the experience and learning how we can improve our environment. Next year, we hope to have even more events and students involved. Here are some reflections from Eco-buddies:
Kumkum Parmar 7A - Yesterday was the best day ever as we explained about our own topics. It was a good experience to explain to young kids and adults about our experiments related to nature.
Shonchari Subha 7N - It was an amazing experience for me because I got the chance to show my knowledge about science.
Tanvi Pawar 5I- It was an amazing experience because I got to explain to people about nature and our environment.
Aaron Tigga 5I- When I was doing my experiment, I learned more by getting feedback from the visitors and I got to learn more about our environment.
