I have been working as a Primary school teacher in Ireland for the past 10 years. The school in which I worked was a large primary school specialising in the junior cycle of Reception, KS1 and early KS2, with six classes in every stream. I have been fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to teach each year group. During my time there I also organised the Drama Club and directed many Christmas plays and end of year musicals. I am passionate about drama and really enjoy incorporating it into my daily lessons. I was a member of the Board of Management in my school, which gave me a wonderful insight into how a school runs. I was also a member of our very successful Green School Committee whom were awarded a green flag for waste management.
With regard to professional development, I was responsible for training staff members in using interactive whiteboards. Although I really enjoyed my time teaching in Ireland and found it very rewarding, I felt that I was somewhat limited in the experience I could gain in a junior school. In addition to this, I adore travelling and the idea of moving to another country as well as being able to develop professionally really appealed to me. I have travelled and enjoyed the cultures of many countries in Asia but Thailand has always stood firmly as my favourite. So, when I was fortunate enough to be offered a teaching position at a prestigious school like St. Andrews International School Bangkok, I jumped at the opportunity.
I thoroughly enjoy keeping fit and regularly run and go to the gym. I also like attending fitness classes such as yoga and high intensity interval training. While living in Bangkok, I intend to join the GAA and play Gaelic football, the national sport of Ireland. I also hope to join a netball team. Four years ago, during my second trip to Thailand, I completed my open water PADI course. Since then, every time I travel to Asia during the holidays, I look forward to diving. I am delighted that now I am living in Thailand, I will be able to dive more often and do my advanced course.
This will be my first time to working a school which accommodates both Primary and High School on the same campus. I like having the opportunity to work with High School teachers and gain insight into their teaching methods and practices. I found this particularly interesting during staff professional development sessions. St. Andrews is an extremely well resourced school, especially in the area of ICT. The school campus has wonderful facilities such as the two swimming pools and the gym area. I feel that I will really enjoy my time teaching here.
