Building confidence for residential trips: The Year 2 School Sleepover at St Andrews

The Year 2 School Sleepover is always a much-anticipated event, transforming classrooms into cosy campsites and giving children a memorable one-night stay at school filled with fun, exploration, and personal growth. The school comes alive with laughter, excitement, and a real sense of adventure as our Year 2 students take part in a thoughtfully planned programme of activities.
A full afternoon of activity
The afternoon is packed with engaging experiences. Children take part in activities such as swimming, archery, a lively mini disco, pizza-making, and time to enjoy the FS play area. These moments bring lots of fun while building teamwork, creativity, and confidence in a relaxed, supportive setting.

Dinner and a torchlight adventure
As evening approaches, everyone comes together for a BBQ-style dinner, enjoying time with friends in a calm and social atmosphere.
One of the highlights of this one-night sleepover is the ‘torchlight tour’ of the school grounds. With torches in hand, students explore familiar spaces in a completely different way, discovering nocturnal wildlife such as frogs and millipedes. It’s an exciting experience that sparks curiosity and wonder.

Winding down and taking responsibility
After a full day, the children settle into their classrooms for the night, snuggled into their sleeping bags and ready to rest.
Throughout the sleepover, they are encouraged to take responsibility for their own routines, including setting up their sleeping spaces, changing into pyjamas, brushing their teeth, and keeping track of their belongings. These small but important tasks help build independence, organisation, and confidence.
The following morning begins with a hearty breakfast, often including eggs, pancakes, French toast, and warm Khao Tom.

Preparing for the Year 3 residential trip
This one-night sleepover is more than just a fun event; it’s an important step in preparing children for the future. Spending a night away from home, even in a familiar environment, helps them develop resilience and independence.
By completing the sleepover successfully, students gain the confidence they need for future residential experiences. It gives them reassurance and excitement as they look ahead to their Year 3 residential trip.
