The Bulldog Girls and Bulldog Boys marched into the second week of the CAMs Basketball League last week. On Tuesday, they welcomed league newcomers Bernard Zell Anshe Emet Day (BZAED) followed by a Thursday fixture against our friends at Bennett Day School.
The Bulldog Girls were walking with confidence after winning their opening two league games. Yet, they entered the court with focus and determination. It was very much an end to end affair for the first half. Despite holding a slender lead for much of the game they struggled to extend the lead further. This was simply down to the resilience of the BZAED defense. It was midway through the second half when the girls saw their hard work finally pay off. They extended their lead beyond the reach of BZAED and saw off the game to win 20 – 14.
The atmosphere carried into the Bulldog Boys match up. It was clear to see from the first whistle that this was going to be a well-matched fixture. It was a high tempo, end to end affair which saw the Bulldogs fall behind early in the game. They didn’t relent and scoreboard started to light up for both teams. It was neck and neck with 6 minutes remaining and all to play for. Two quick breaks saw BZAED take a slender lead and despite a barrage of Bulldog attacks, the ball just would not sink. At the final buzzer, the game finished 16 – 23 in favor of BZAEDS.
Thursday saw the Bulldogs pitted against another newcomer to the league this year, Bennett Day. Both squads are shown very positive signs of development, creativity, and confidence. The Bulldog Girls got off the mark very quickly taking a 15 point lead into half time. Francesca used her pace to break quickly. The effervescent Scarlett worked tirelessly throughout. They moved the ball with increasing speed and with more success at the hoop, the score might have been wider still as it finished 30 – 7.
The Bulldog boys took the baton passed to them and looked to write their wrongs from their previous defeat. They did so in absolute style with the game finishing a solid 39 – 14. Arjun ran the left side of the court ragged laying on a number of defense splitting passes.
It wasn’t just the atmosphere from the bleachers that was hot last Tuesday. Mr Hopps’ Cooking Club was also present at the game selling homemade treats. They raised over $80 for Lakeview Pantry – what fantastic, charitable work.
