Rachel Blumenthal

Rachel Blumenthal Headshot

Flute Instructor

I am a Chicago native, and I maintain an active freelance career here in the city. I perform as a regular substitute with orchestras like the Chicago Symphony, the Lyric Opera of Chicago, and the Grant Park Music Festival. In addition to freelancing and teaching here in Chicago, I hold permanent positions in the Santa Fe Opera and the Sarasota Opera. I have completed fellowships at the Boston Symphony's Tanglewood Music Center, Aspen Music Festival, and National Repertory Orchestra, among others. I teach in the Department of Chamber Music at the University of Chicago in addition to maintaining a lively private studio. Teaching growing flutists is something that I find incredibly gratifying: my current students range in age from 8 to 72!

I focus on posture and tone production from the very beginning with my students. There is nothing more important than playing with a pure tone and a lovely singing quality! I also put a strong emphasis on counting and technique. My goal is always for my students to be able to count challenging rhythms and figure out tricky passages for themselves: it gives them real confidence on their instruments and makes them feel independent.

What is a highlight from your performing career?

Performing Brahms’ 1st and 2nd Symphonies with Ricardo Muti and the Chicago Symphony in 2017, performing with Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble in the Shed at Tanglewood in 2016, touring Japan in 2017 and China in 2011…I’ve been lucky in my career!

Fun Fact

I collect refrigerator magnets! I love to pick out a new magnet every time I travel to a new place. Friends also know to bring them back for me from their travels, and now my entire refrigerator is covered in almost 100 (!!) really special magnets.
