BISC Lincoln Park & South Loop Community Message

Friday June 5th, 2020

Dear BISC Community,

We strongly believe that our communities already understand that everyone should be equal, however mere acknowledgement of this right is not enough if we are to address the social injustices that exist in our society.

While we have already begun to tackle this issue, we know that, as schools we must do more. Each one of us, as individuals and institutions, needs to ask what changes we can make in order to make the world the place we wish it to be and that our children deserve. We must reflect on our own unconscious biases, actions, and inactions and then we must set about making those changes.  Both schools have taken steps in the right direction this week, but we know these steps must be the beginning of an embedded, sustained response and that all members of our community must be heard.

The actions of last week and the tragic death of George Floyd has us revisiting a topic that is not new.  The very fact that such injustice, prejudice, and racism exist in our society invokes feelings that we find difficult to process, and even more challenging to vocalize. Racism and any other form of discrimination have no place in our society.

For all members of our African American community, it is imperative that we convey to you our fullest, unwavering support in standing in solidarity and ensuring that the events of recent days do not go unacknowledged.  We cannot begin to speculate on what you are feeling right now but we are committed to working with our students, staff, and families to create sustainable change.

Yours respectfully,

Mr. Mike Henderson                          Mr. Ed Pearce
