Carla Williamson | British International School of Chicago, Lincoln Park

Year 1 Leader

Teaching was something I always wanted to do after having such a positive school experience of my own while growing up in a small town in Lincolnshire, England. Before moving to Chicago I taught in both Key Stages 1 and 2 in a highly successful primary school in the outskirts of Liverpool following my graduation from University.

I strive to ensure my classroom is a creative and challenging environment for all children. It is important that children are able to have as many experiences as possible and connect and apply their learning to real-life situations. Making links and seeing purpose in their learning also allows the children to develop their independence and problem-solving abilities, which are crucial skills in our ever-changing world. Challenge helps students progress while allowing them to build a depth and greater understanding of a particular area. It is also important in developing confidence and independence. It is always so lovely to see the look on a child's face when they complete something they previously deemed "difficult", and it is always a springboard to the next part of their learning journey.

Chicago is such a vibrant city with so much to do. I enjoy exploring the city and especially trying out all the wonderful restaurants and watching the local sports teams. I am a keen sports fan and enjoy keeping fit in my spare time.
