What are the aims for your students and your teaching philosophy?

It is my highest priority that I not only get students singing better in the moment, but that they become thoroughly acquainted with their instrument and its working that they may have the necessary knowledge to continue to improve long into the future. This includes detailed study of the craft of singing, ie. Improvement of musicianship, lyric/textual study, and engagement with language and storytelling, as well as the requisite vocal development. Lessons are centered around developing good practice habits for greater effectiveness in vocal and artistic development.

What is the highlight of your performing career?

I am much more pedagogically inclined than I am performance-driven, so my performance history is modest. But I particularly enjoyed a recital of Mozart and Disney that was a collaboration between my studio and colleagues one year. I also enjoy performing in recital with my wife, who is a wonderful coach and collaborative pianist.

Fun Fact

When I was young, I initially got into classical vocal music because of the book Phantom of the Opera, which is set in the Opera House Le Palais Garnier, in Paris. Many years later, I had the good fortune go to Paris and to visit the Opera house, and even got to peek into the window of the famous "Box 5" from the story.
