Danielle Zaya

I attended Bethel University in St. Paul, Minnesota for my undergraduate degree in history and classics. While studying history, I spent time researching in the university library and realized working as a librarian would be something I would love. I returned to Chicago to pursue a Master of Information and Library Science, which I received at Dominican University in River Forest.

As a graduate student, I worked with the American Library Association as an intern in the Awards Department. I worked closely with the facilitation of national book awards for children, including the Newbery & Caldecott Awards. During this time I also served on my public library’s board, as one of eight elected trustees. After graduate school I worked in a public library in the Children’s Department. I love working with young people and am excited to be bringing my knowledge of literature and research to assist students here at BISC.

What I find stands out at British International School of Chicago is the excitement and engagement the whole school has in regards to learning, academics and the arts, in particular. As the librarian for both the Primary and Secondary Schools, I can say this is evident throughout the entire student body.

Outside of work, I spend my time listening to and playing music. I am a classically trained violinist with a love for folk and traditional music, and teach at a fiddle camp in the summer. To get through the Midwestern winters, I cross country ski and frequent many of Chicago’s coffee and donut shops. And of course, the librarian in me finds nothing more relaxing than reading a favorite book.
