For me the things which help to make British International School of Chicago unique are its staff and students. The staff are all highly professional in their approach to providing students with the best opportunity to learn and often go far beyond what is expected to ensure students exceed their goals. The students come from a diverse mix of cultures and truly represent the international aspect of our school. Their enthusiasm and passion for learning takes them far beyond the norm and allows them to explore their subjects in a greater depth than would otherwise be possible.

Literature has been a great passion of mine from an early age, and I decided to study the subject at degree level in my home town of Bristol.

In 2014, I moved to Brighton to complete my PGCE and fulfil my dream of becoming a teacher. I then started working in a boarding school sector in East Sussex, where I also took charge of the Film & Media department at the High School college. My love of teaching Film & Media really grew here as I began to see the wonderful creative and analytical work the subjects inspired in students, and the relevance of the subject for young people made me decide to focus more on this aspect of my teaching, and initially attracted me to make the move to Nord Anglia.

My love of learning and the arts permeates all aspects of my life; I am rarely to be found without a book in my hand or out enjoying a new play, an exhibition or the latest cinema release. I also manage to squeeze the odd audio book in whilst out running, and completed my first marathon last year.

I was inspired to become a teacher when I took a year to travel around South East Asia after finishing university. I decided to move abroad and got an opportunity to work as a TEFL Teacher in South Korea. Cultural differences at first seemed difficult and challenging, in time I understood how to learn, accept and appreciate these differences. I immersed myself in the latest technologies living in a country like South Korea. I was surrounded by many cutting edge devices, tools software’s and gadgets which fed my addiction to technology.

British International School of Chicago, South Loop is a palce where every student can realize their full potential. It goes without saying that the excellent facilities enhance learning, but, in my experience, what makes the biggest difference in a student's learning are outstanding teachers. I fell in love with teaching whilst working as a teaching assistant after completing my degree in Fashion and Textile Design. I was inspired by my students’ curiosity and enjoyment of their learning to complete my PGCE in 2014. For the last four years I have worked in a secondary school in Luton where, as Subject Leader, I designed a curriculum to encourage independent exploration of creative thinking, and getting students to look at their world from new perspectives.

I completed my Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science before enrolling for a PGCE in ICT, as Computer Science wasn’t a National Curriculum subject at the time. When the new Computer Science curriculum was introduced, I was able to capitalize on my degree to successfully help my school with its development and implementation, part of which entailed upskilling other staff members.

After 6 great years teaching in secondary schools, I saw an opportunity to work with the British Computer Society where I would be able to have a national impact on the subject for which I am so passionate. During my time there I had a hand in the development and delivery of national computing programs across England.

Personal highlights for me include giving the keynote speech at the Education World Leaders Forum in South Korea, and speaking at events in Mexico and Malaysia about the importance of Computing education in the modern world.

Despite these great moments, my heart has always been in the classroom and I’m delighted to be back teaching again especially at such an exceptional school.
