  • Samuel Cosgrove - German and French Specialist

    Samuel Cosgrove

Head of Languages | German & French Specialist

    Samuel Cosgrove

After graduating from the University of Edinburgh with an MA in German Studies (with French) and taking a year to work for a German franchise, I started my career in a large 11-18 school in the Northwest of England. I have always been fascinated with languages and can still remember the enthusiasm that my language teachers taught me with – something I strive to provide for the students in my classes so that they really feel that Deutsch macht Spaß. My year abroad was spent in Germany (with some time in France), and whilst living in Leipzig I made some lifelong friends who I still speak with and visit as much as I can. I completed a Masters degree in Teaching & Learning through the University of Manchester in 2020, looking specifically at how students view the use of target language in the classroom.

I teach middle and high school French here at British International School of Chicago and feel lucky every day to teach students with a passion to learn and such enthusiasm for French. I also feel very fortunate to have taught some of my students for many years. I have been teaching the International Baccalaureate Diploma for eight years and love the diversity of the course and challenging my students to communicate at a high level in French. I have been an IB examiner for the last three years.

British International School of Chicago is an amazing and unique school environment to work in. As a language teacher, I love that we have such a varied and diverse student and parent body, with a variety of languages and cultures represented. I appreciate how motivated the students at BISC are to learn other languages and about other cultures, and how enthusiastic and supportive the parents are about this, too.

I grew up in a binational French-English family in Brittany (Northwestern France). I stayed in France for my Undergraduate studies, then worked in Tourism, Import and Export for a few years, including a role for a shipping company in South Africa. I completed my Postgraduate Certificate in Education at the University of Cambridge, followed by a Masters of Education. My Masters thesis focused on third language acquisition for pupils with English as an Additional Language, which was inspired by my own experience as a bilingual learner. I started my teaching career in Secondary Schools, then switched to Primary with my latest teaching role before joining BISC South Loop being in a Prep School in Knightsbridge, London.

  • Rozenn Grainger

    Rozenn Grainger

    French and German Specialist

    Rozenn Grainger

I did a BA in French, German, and Italian in Wales, two years of which I spent living and studying abroad in Berlin, Lyon, and Perugia. I graduated in 2013 and was all set to do a Masters in Interpreting when I had a sudden change of heart in favor of teaching; I like to put it down to too many amazing summers of running summer camps, but whatever led me to that decision, it was the best one I ever made.

I completed my PGCE at the University of Cambridge in 2015, and since then I have taught at both primary and secondary level in schools in Cambridgeshire and Devon. For the past two years I have been teaching French and German at a secondary school in East London, where I was also one of the Exams Officers. I love giving students opportunities to use languages outside of the classroom be it through competitions, trips or exchanges.

  • Laura Blaskett

    Laura Blaskett

    Spanish & French Specialist

    Laura Blaskett

I have always loved languages and, as a result, took three languages (French, German, and Spanish) at GCSE level. I went on to study Spanish, Politics, and International Relations, at the University of Kent. During this time, I spent a year at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid as part of a study abroad program. Living in Spain was a hugely valuable experience for me; it showed me first-hand the benefits of learning a foreign language, and allowed me to access a new culture and make friends with people from different walks of life. Once I graduated, I returned to Madrid where I spent two years teaching English as a Foreign Language. During this time I taught all age groups, from Kindergarten to adults. During my second year, I worked at a school and this is where I realized my passion for teaching, recognizing that it was something I wanted to do long-term.

I received my PGCE from the University of Sussex and worked at two schools in my hometown, Brighton, as a Spanish and French teacher. After moving to Chicago I covered two maternity teaching positions in the city, including one at BISC. I'm now back full-time and teach Middle and High School languages.
