Samuel Cosgrove

Samuel Cosgrove - German and French Specialist

Head of Languages | German & French Specialist

After graduating from the University of Edinburgh with an MA in German Studies (with French) and taking a year to work for a German franchise, I started my career in a large 11-18 school in the Northwest of England. I have always been fascinated with languages and can still remember the enthusiasm that my language teachers taught me with – something I strive to provide for the students in my classes so that they really feel that Deutsch macht Spaß. My year abroad was spent in Germany (with some time in France), and whilst living in Leipzig I made some lifelong friends who I still speak with and visit as much as I can. I completed a Masters degree in Teaching & Learning through the University of Manchester in 2020, looking specifically at how students view the use of target language in the classroom.

It is a pleasure to come to work every day at the British International School of Chicago, South Loop. Our students are some of the most engaged, driven, and successful that I have taught. It is wonderful to see how much they get out of their language lessons, and how willing they are to take risks in their learning. Working in a vibrant international school like ours is exciting, and it is enriching to be able to work with pupils from all different backgrounds, and with colleagues who all have different experiences. I particularly enjoy getting to teach the I.B. Diploma Program which is rigorous, cross-curricular, and truly the gold star in education.

Outside of teaching, I am a keen swimmer – you’ll find me most mornings in the pool by 5 am! – but I also love lots of different types of exercise as I find it is a good way of maintaining good mental health. Despite taking a break from it for several years, I am an avid reader of all genres, and I enjoy traveling to new places as often as I can.
