Jonny Schouten

Jonny Schouten

Music Specialist

I hold a BA (Hons) Music Production from Leeds College of Music; PCGEi (with Distinction) from Nottingham University

I am a classically trained and self-taught musician from Manchester, England and joined BISC-SL after 7 years of living and teaching in Nanjing, China. Over the course of my life I have played clarinet and percussion in orchestras, DJ’d at Glastonbury festival, played in the musician’s pit for stage musicals, rapped on stage around North West England, drummed for rock, pop, jazz, metal, and reggae bands (as well as other bands whose genre can’t be so neatly classified), and written and produced many, many hours of my own and other people’s music in dozens of different genres (I’m still waiting for Simon Cowell to call me back…!). I am incredibly passionate about music and consider myself very fortunate to have the opportunity to impart my passion for a living! My absolute favorite thing about teaching music is helping young people discover their own musical journey and giving them as much support, guidance, and advice as I can. Aside from music, in my spare time I love to play and watch sports, particularly football (OK, soccer…) and cricket; I am an avid reader and keep my Kindle close to me at all times, and I love to travel and explore new places to find awesome scenery.

This school is different to all others I have worked at because ... Not only does the school give students the best possible opportunities academically, but also its international ethos, along with the location of the school in a first-class international city, gives students a unique chance to develop their characters and personalities by learning from and working alongside people from a hugely diverse range of cultures and backgrounds.
