I grew up in a small town outside of Liverpool and graduated with honors from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne with a degree in marine biology; I undertook a further year of postgraduate study looking at technology in the marine environment and completed a research project with Akzonobel. I completed my postgraduate certificate in education at Edge Hill University with a joint teaching specialism of biology and chemistry.
I have taught in schools in County Durham and Leeds, and enjoy my time in the classroom and love the opportunity to get students as excited and enthusiastic about science as I am. Teaching has provided me with some fantastic opportunities, and recently I got to undertake my first scientific expedition to Iceland - I hope to be able to lead students on their own such expeditions in the future.
Through my work as a teacher associate for the National Science Learning Centre, I was given the fantastic opportunity to be the keynote speaker at the National STEM Centers celebration of STEM evening at the Natural History Museum in London. I have also worked alongside EDF Energy in bringing their Big Energy Project to schools across the UK; it was an enjoyable experience and interesting to work with non-teaching staff and support them in delivering an educational project.
I enjoy many outdoor activities such as walking, camping, scuba diving and horse riding. I am an open water instructor and whilst in England shared a horse called Jack. I am up for a challenge and last year entered my first triathlon following on from my first open water swim in Lake Windermere. I am also an avid reader of fiction and non-fiction, enjoy many films (particularly Studio Ghibli), socializing with friends and family, traveling and a range of music, theatre and comedy. Since arriving in Chicago I have enjoyed my introduction to improv comedy and American sports - I am a huge Blackhawks fan!
