As a parent, one of the reasons I love Compass is the learning opportunities the school presents without being in close proximity to text books, books bags, whiteboards and pop quizzes! Through the extra-curricular activities on offer, Compass exposes students to many meaningful experiences that broaden their knowledge, and cultivates the type of awareness and appreciation that cannot be taught from a text book.
On Monday, 23 October a mix of Primary and Secondary students achieved new skills, became more self-aware and explored a whole new world from the depth of our school swimming pool.
Students participated in the PADI Bubble Maker programme under the direct care and supervision of PADI pros from Poseidon Dive Center. During this basic introduction to scuba diving, the children learnt about scuba equipment and how it works. They then got to try it out. Not only did they take their first breathe underwater but they learnt how to use scuba gear in a safe and effective way, preparing them for future endeavours. They learnt how to equalise, clear the regulator and breathe efficiently. They became masters of non-verbal communications by learning how to communicate underwater without speaking. They accomplished a sense of success and empowerment as they navigated their way underwater through obstacles.
The most important lesson the Bubble Makers learnt that day, however, was how to have fun.
The smile on each and every one of the participants when they surfaced was priceless. One student summed up the experience with “that is the best thing I have ever done in my life.”
Now that my son has done the Bubble Maker, he is set on the path to becoming a future scuba diver. Thanks Poseidon Dive Center for introducing him to a whole new world! Our family holidays will never be the same again.
Look out Maldives….here we come!
