In Year 4MC, our IPC unit is ‘How Humans Work’. Over the last couple of weeks, we have been focusing on our teeth. We learnt about the functions of our teeth, the importance of them and how to look after them.
Firstly, we used plaque disclosure tablets to find out where plaque was present in our mouth (the tablets leave traces of purple in the mouth where there is plaque). We had to brush our teeth and keep on brushing until we had removed all traces of plaque.
We learnt about the different types of teeth that carnivores, omnivores and herbivores have and the reasons why animals and humans need different shaped teeth. Afterwards, we used clay to make a model of human teeth, making sure we carefully moulded each tooth to create the right shape.
In Science, we tested eggshells to see what effect different liquids would have. We placed an egg in coke, water and vinegar and then left them over the weekend to find out what would happen to the shell. The coke discoloured the eggshell, the vinegar made the eggshell dissolve and the water had no impact at all on the eggshell. This showed us the importance of considering what we eat and drink and ensuring we brush out teeth every day to get rid of the food and drink we consume.
