Stephanie Innes-Smith

French Teacher

I studied French and Spanish at St Andrews University then qualified as a secondary school teacher in 2009.  After teaching in a state boarding school followed by a selective grammar school, a legal career beckoned so I completed the Graduate Diploma in Law and Legal Practice Course in York.  During this time, I continued to gain teaching experience by supply teaching to support my legal studies.

A two-year training contract at a national law firm in Leeds taught me that billing people for their misery in six-minute units did not sit well so I returned to the classroom in 2017 when I moved to Qatar.  I enjoyed the role of French teacher, IB CAS coordinator and International Award Coordinator at a British curriculum school in Doha.

I have been an Army Reservist since 2012 and I relish the varied physical and mental challenges this presents.  Outside school, I am trying to learn Dutch, hoping to complete my MSc in Psychology soon and planning the first all-female 500km run around the perimeter of Qatar, to take place in February 2021.  I spend most of my spare time running and organising the run club's book group but I can also be found reading, sewing and staring listlessly out of windows like a character from a Jane Austen novel.

Organising overseas trips is my favourite element of teaching because students always gain so much from experiential learning.  I hope to be able to bring this knowledge and experience to Compass and I am looking forward to everything I will learn in the new environment of the primary school!
