I believe that learning is a life-long pursuit and I have always valued academic study. I obtained my BA Honours degree in English from Sheffield Hallam University in 2012 and then went on to study for my PGCE in Secondary English at the University of Leeds in 2014. Once I had finished my PGCE, I decided to undertake a three-year, part-time course for a MA in Teaching, (also from the University of Leeds) which has been invaluable in developing both my research skills and my teaching practice in the classroom. I completed my Masters with Distinction in August 2017.
My teaching career began with me spending three years teaching at a state secondary school in my home town, where I had the opportunity to work with students from a variety of backgrounds and with a variety of needs. Despite the challenges this can bring, I found working with these students incredibly rewarding- particularly on results day, when each year my students exceeded their own expectations.
Although my teaching career is still relatively young, I have already held a variety of leadership positions, including responsibility for Year 7 Catch Up in English; being an ITT and NQT mentor, becoming an Excellent Practitioner in English, and for the last three years, being a Head of Year at NAS Dubai. I have found my role as Head of Year particularly rewarding and I am incredibly proud of the contribution I have made to our outstanding pastoral care at NAS Dubai.
My love of literature began at a very young age- while listening to my Grandad read me stories in his garden- and has endured ever since. I want to instill this same love for stories in my students, and as an English Teacher, I am passionate about the use of literary texts as a vehicle for teaching skills in English: this passion is evident throughout my lessons. I believe that, as English is the medium through which all other subjects are taught, developing skills in my subject is vital to a student’s entire educational success.
I am absolutely committed to our NAS philosophy of ‘being ambitious both for ourselves and others’ and I feel incredibly privileged to work at a school with such talented, inspiring, and caring teachers and such dedicated, hard-working students.
