I grew up on the East Coast of Canada on a small island. I was fortunate to have excellent teachers that inspired me to continue to be a life-long learner. I knew that I always wanted to go into teaching and would continually feel a sense of fulfillment in helping my fellow classmates. This joy for education was instilled in me from a young age and I could not see myself doing anything else. I believe in the explicit teaching of essential skills in communication inquiry and critical thinking, which will enable all students to become adaptable and successful life-long learners and leaders.
I graduated University with a BSc in Chemistry and minor in Business I then went on to earn my BEd. I knew I needed to explore the world so I began to look for career paths outside of Canada and I stumbled on an opportunity to teach in Doha and jumped at the chance to advance my teaching by joining a British school. I was amazed at the differences of the education system as a whole and quickly fell in love with the challenge of adapting a new curriculum to my current pedagogy.
My next adventure was to Dubai and that was 9 years ago. Here in Dubai I have never turned down an opportunity to better myself and continue to learn. I have kept myself informed with current advancements in Science to include real like examples in my teaching practice. I have gone through two updates to the IB curriculum and have kept up to date with my training and took part in extension courses to further my growth. I have held positions as Head of Year, Second in Charge of Science, Head of department in Science, and Assistant Principal. I am excited this year to focus solely on teaching Science as this is where I am truly passionate. The connection in the classroom between student and teacher is an everlasting bond. I am dedicated to nurturing the students’ enquiring nature of Science. Creating a challenging environment and building high levels of engagement, whilst making sure every student is progressing to their goals is what I aim for in every lesson. I always strive to make Science relatable and enjoyable for everyone in the classroom.
In my spare time I enjoy running, swimming, and spending time with my young family and friends. I enjoy living in Dubai and engrossing myself in the different cultures and diversities of this city. I look forward to becoming part of NAS and immersing myself in this wonderful community.
