Luke Smith

Luke Smith Secondary LRC Manager

Teacher of English

I have been at the British International School of Houston since 2011, when my wife, Ms Capper, was offered a job here as Teacher of Geography/Humanities. After meeting with the Head Teacher and Deputy Head, I was subsequently offered the role of Learning Resource Centre Manager (or Secondary Librarian, as it’s comparably known) – which I was very happy to accept. Over my time here I have worked to strengthen the library’s collections, and its utility within the school, and I look forward to continuing this process over the coming years.

Before coming to the BISH, I worked for four years in the Music Department of Oxford University Press, as Production Controller. During my time at OUP I also completed an MSt. in English/Creative Writing at the University of Oxford, fitting part-time study for the course around my work hours (which proved challenging at times, but which is something I feel now I can be proud of).

Alongside reading, and writing poetry and prose, I like films and food and all of the other things that everyone likes. I have a BA in Music Technology, and enjoy making music and other kinds of weird squelchy noises with my laptop and then trying to convince other people to release it – which is occasionally successful. I also co-edit an online literary magazine, and have been lucky enough to publish work by some excellent writers, including Lydia Davis, George Szirtes, Ron Rash, and AE Stallings, among others. Perhaps most impressively, I enjoy a spot of five-a-side football, where my performance has garnered such comments as “Oh for goodness sake”, “What are you doing!?”, and “It’s like passing to a bollard”.
