Along with all schools in Spain, International College Spain was unable to hold presential classes from March 12 2020 for the remainder of the academic year 2019 to 2020.
The school ensured that no teaching time was lost due to effective contingency plans, developed in anticipation of this situation occurring and implemented immediately by the Senior Leadership Team.
From the point of closure of presential classes to the end of the academic year the school adopted a virtual approach to teaching and learning using Microsoft Teams to connect in class with students, alongside a wide range of on-line subject specific learning platforms to continue to offer an engaging and stimulating learning environment for students. The school ensured that all students were able to engage in live online classes, and where time differences dictated, teachers recorded their lessons and made them available online, whilst implementing strategies to ensure that learning had taken place.
Teachers were able to set and assess student work in the same way as when teaching presential classes. This was done through the use of the ManageBac platform where work is uploaded by subject teachers, completed and uploaded for assessment by students.
There was no disruption to our normal university application processes. Students in Grade 12 had access to University Counsellors through MS Teams and individual one-to-one guidance was provided throughout the academic year and continued after exam results were published, to ensure that students were assisted in securing their desired university place. 88% of our Grade 12 students applying to UK, 50% of our total cohort, were accepted by their first-choice university.
All Grade 11 students had already met on one-to-one basis with the full time University and Careers Counsellor. An individual action plan for each student had been drawn up at this meeting and students were able to follow it during the remainder of the academic year and over the summer. Our Introduction to University Processes and Applications was held as a virtual event in June and enabled students to gain an understanding of the university application cycle and resources available to assist their research over the summer.
Grade 11 internal exams took place online and will be used alongside data collected through ongoing teaching and learning to determine predicted grades. ICS has a strong pastoral culture where subject teachers have a good knowledge of their individual students’ skills and attributes and formal internal exams form just one element to determining predicted grades.
