Early Years

At the British International School of Kuala Lumpur, we believe that a safe, secure and happy environment is critical during the early stages of development.

v

Our caring and nurturing environment  lets children feel at ease, like they do at home, so they are receptive to learning. We provide our youngest learners with an educational experience that helps them develop a positive approach to learning that will be critical to their success in primary school, secondary school and beyond.

Teaching and learning at this stage are mainly done through play. Children typically have the freedom to choose from a range of purposeful games and activities. The teacher sometimes leads the class in activity, or sets children off on their own activities, whilst always being at hand to provide guidance and encouragement. Our class sizes feature low adult to child ratios.

A typical day involves conversation, discussion, questions and reasoning, storytelling, looking at and reading books, learning rhymes, outdoor activities, and plenty of socialising. Specialist lessons in Music, PE, and a modern foreign language are also a part of the curriculum.

Our early years programme consists of three year groups:

  • Pre-Nursery (age 2 by September 1 of the school year)
  • Nursery (age 3 by September 1 of the school year)
  • Reception (age 4 by September 1 of the school year)

The curriculum focuses on seven areas of learning.

  • Communication & Language
  • Physical Development
  • Personal, Social, & Emotional Development
  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts & Design
