Ms Rachael Cocking

1

Year 1 Teacher and Handwriting Project Champion

BSc (Hons) Psychology (University of St Andrews); PGCE with QTS (University of Cumbria)

Rachael has been teaching at BSKL for two years and is looking forward to taking on new challenges in her third year at the school. Prior to this, Rachael taught at a Primary school in the Greater Manchester area of the UK for four years. Her experience ranges from Reception to Year 5, with a large part of her time being spent in Year 1.

Throughout her teaching career, Rachael has taken on a number of extra responsibilities including; developing a new curriculum as computing subject lead, running a year six book club, reception French club and chairing the School Council. At BSKL, Rachael has taken part in the Assessment Lead programme, implemented a cursive writing scheme across the Primary school and actively volunteers as a Beaver Scout Leader for 3rd KL Scout group.

Rachael found her passion for teaching whilst completing a Psychology degree at the University of St Andrews, taking particular interest in cognition, early childhood and developmental studies. During this time, she also took part in many community outreach and summer programmes for disadvantaged school children in the Fife area of Scotland.

Rachael is a keen volunteer and fundraiser, and before moving to Malaysia spent one month delivering sustainable training to primary teachers in Ghana with LRTT. This incredibly rewarding and life-changing experience led her to take on a role as a mentor to a newly qualified teacher at a partner school, as well as fuelling an appetite for travel. As an animal lover, Rachael fosters rescued cats and kittens in KL while they wait to find a long term owner.

Aside from teaching, Rachael enjoys sailing and has competed in a number of competitions from a young age. Reading is one of Rachael's passions, as well as watercolour painting, dancing and spending time with her Bengal cat Arthur.
