Public vs private?
The best public schools in New York are oversubscribed and finding a seat in your preferred school can be tough. A private school can give students access to an excellent education without some of the downsides associated with public education.
Personalized Learning Through Small Class Sizes
The class sizes in public schools are large. Even the best public schools in Manhattan have 30 children per class. While this provides the best value for the state, it doesn’t provide the best education for the children. We believe that the most effective learning occurs when teachers have time to get to know how individual children learn. We call this “personalized learning”, and it is one the main principles of our curriculum.
Academics in our school
Academically, our school offers a unique experience to all students, who benefit from the Nord Anglia collaborations with MIT, Juilliard and UNICEF. These collaborations allow our students to gain a unique perspective of the world, their abilities and their responsibilities as a global citizen. Our students enjoy regular events and challenges which teach them how to think, not what to think.
No “teaching to the test”
One of the negative things we hear from parents who transfer to Nord Anglia New York from a public school is the amount of time taken “teaching to the test”. With funding tied to school performance and school rankings it is understandable why public schools would focus on testing but we believe that this limits the amount of time students have to learn. Our focus is solely on giving our students the tools they need to become successful, well-rounded members of society. Our students test exceptionally well because they have the time they need to absorb the material and truly understand it.
The Benefits of Our Unique International School
Our school is truly a global school. We have nationalities from every corner of the world, and we celebrate this once a year in our International Week Fair. We give our students a truly global perspective through the Nord Anglia Global Campus which connects students from our 66 schools worldwide. You can read more here.
Students in our school learn Spanish from our native Spanish-speaking teacher four days out of five. This continuity means that they have ample opportunity to immerse themselves in Spanish as a foreign language – a must if they are to become proficient Spanish speakers.
Extra-Curricular Activities and Extended Day
Students at our school have the option to take extra lessons, given by our visiting Juilliard music teachers, as well as after school classes that range from coding, to Mandarin, choir, ballet and French. We also have a number of extra-curricular sports clubs as well as interschool sports leagues in soccer, basketball, volleyball and competitive track and cross country.
We also offer extended day provision for all students which allows flexibility for our working families. Students are cared for by familiar staff members until 6pm each day and our service is available as a last minute option too – essential for those times when schedules cannot be predicted.
Teachers at public school do a great job. To manage 34 children and still provide a quality education requires a fantastically gifted educator.
We are fortunate to have some of the most talented teachers in from the UK on our staff. The quality of our school and the desirability of living in New York City means that we receive over 200 applications for every teaching position. Our school benefits from access to the Nord Anglia University which offers ongoing training for all staff, including the opportunity to study in association with Kings College London. Our school in New York was recently recognized as making the most use of the Nord Anglia University materials out of all 66 Nord Anglia schools worldwide!
Opportunities for our Upper School students
As students progress to Upper School, they have the opportunity to compete in the Global Games, an inter-school sports contest between all the Nord Anglia Education schools in the Americas Region. Alternatively, students can choose to go to a Performing Arts Festival in Florida or a fundraising and volunteer trip to Tanzania.
Our ambitions for your child
At our school, students are constantly challenged to think for themselves, to search for answers and solutions in new and creative ways. We expect all of our students to be ambitious and reach for the stars, whatever they want to be.
