    Head of Early Years

    Gemma McIntosh

I graduated with First Class Honours in Primary Education in 2004 from the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow. I taught in Scotland for four years before starting my international teaching experience in The British School of Chicago, one of our Nord Anglia sister schools. There, I taught Early Years and had the additional responsibilities of Literacy Co-ordinator and Modern Foreign Languages Co-ordinator. I also spent two years in the Canary Islands teaching in a British International School where I gained invaluable experience teaching children with English as an additional language. I have always loved New York as a city and was delighted to take up post at Nord Anglia International School, New York, at the beginning of 2014. Since joining the school I have taught in Early Years however, this academic year, I currently teach Year Two with the additional responsibility of Key Stage Leader.

I was born in Scotland and I am a graduate of the University of Aberdeen, with a Bachelor of Education Honors Degree. I have experience in teaching all stages and curricular areas in schools throughout Scotland. I have a keen interest in using technology to enhance learning and teaching opportunities. Recently, I carried out research into the Philosophy for Children approach to learning and I incorporate this daily within my teaching practice as a tool to encourage critical thinking and enquiry, in the context of a caring and collaborative community.

I am originally from Carlisle in England. After spending 10 years in London I relocated to New York in 2010. After university I embarked on a career in finance, although I had always held a passion for teaching, spending summers teaching English abroad. In 2005 I decided to retrain as a teacher and returned to full time education at the University of Lancaster in the UK. My teaching career started at Dulwich Hamlet Junior School in London working for 4 years as a classroom teacher and coordinator of math and physical education across the school. I have worked at NAISNY since 2012 as a class teacher in Early Years, Key Stage 1 and 2. I have over 12 years teaching experience both in the classroom and as a private tutor. Creativity is an important attribute in a teacher and I endeavor to make my lessons as engaging as possible for all. The dedicated teachers I have worked with at NAISNY have enabled me to effectively reflect on my teaching practice and develop my teaching skills in many different ways.
Outside of school I enjoy running, playing tennis and cycling with my son. I live in the financial district and look forward each day to taking advantage of all of the great opportunities and experiences New York City has to offer.
NAISNY has a very special community of families, teachers and staff and I feel lucky to have been a part of it since the school’s first year.

I am a graduate of the University of Leicester with a Bachelor of Science Honors Degree in Education with a Biology subject specialism. I have taught pupils from the age of 2-12 years at a number of primary schools throughout Birmingham, UK, where I have had additional responsibilities of Early Years Leader, Year 1 Phase Leader and Outdoor Learning Co-ordinator.

I am particularly enthusiastic and passionate about Early Years teaching, science and technology. As a teacher I am keen to discover the needs and passions of each individual child to make learning as enjoyable and creative as possible to engage and fuel their passion for learning. All pupils are unique and develop at different rates and have individual strengths and talents. I believe, it is important to adopt a child-centered approach to learning, which is based on each pupil’s interests so they can prosper and achieve their best.
