Dutch Family Call Hongqiao Home

When did you move to China?

We moved to China in March 2013. Before China we have lived in Atlanta (USA) and Hong Kong.  We are originally from Holland.

How many children do you have and what years do they attend?

We are a Dutch family and have two kids. Our son Bo is 9 years old and in year 5. Our daughter Jill is 7 years old and in year 3. The kids love to go to the BISS Puxi.

What area do you live and what do you most like about it?

We live in Hongqiao. We love living there because it has a variety of  facilities. Good international supermarkets, nice restaurants and shopping mall’s. I love to go to the flower market which is just 10 minutes by bike. The  commute for my husbands work is also convinient between his office in Pudong and our house. The kids have to take the bus for a little while, but they are used to it. We are exactly in the middle for everybody in our family! In the weekends we love to go to the French concession or the Bund. When the traffic is okay it only takes 20 minutes to go there!

What is your favorite family restaurant?

We have a lots of favorite family restaurants. If we have the time we love to go to eat in the French Concession, for example at Elefante. We also like to eat and enjoy the view of the sky line at the Bund or Pudong. For example Mercato,  the Grand Hyatt or the Kitchen.  Close to our house we love to go to Geneva. Their cheese fondue is absolutely one of the best in Shanghai!

What is your preferred ‘date night’ restaurant in the city?

Shanghai has lots of good restaurants and we haven’t been able to try all of them. On a night out we love to try a new restaurant, mainly on the Bund area or French concession.

What do you do on a typical weekend?

Our weekend starts often with celebrating weekend with a movie night for the kids. It always feels like a little party for them after a busy week. On Saturday and Sunday the kids have to do their homework and after that they go to Lego club  and music lessons. When the kids have their lessons my husband and I like to take a coffee at O’delice . In the afternoons the kids play with their friends on the compound. At that time we are taking some time to relax and read a book, watch tv or go to the gym and do some exercise. In the summer kids love to go to the swimming pool and then may go to lunch or dinner at one of our favorite restaurants.  Now and then we also enjoy one of Shanghai's Sunday brunch with friends. Our favorite is the one at Pudong Shangri-la!
