Year 6 Malaysia Residential 2017 - Part 1

The annual expedition to Gopeng Earth Camp in Malaysia is taking place over these two weeks and our first wave of students just got back. The trip is such a wonderful opportunity for the pupils to gain and develop life skills, such as teamwork, independence and perseverance to name but a few. The skills start before we even set off as we encourage the children to work with their parents in packing bags and ensuring they have all that they will need.

Early Monday morning excited children, some nervous parents and some VERY large suitcases gathered to say farewell, as the Year 6’s prepared themselves for their final trip of primary school… Gopeng, Malaysia!

After a full day of travelling, students eventually arrived at Earth Camp in the evening, ready for a hearty meal (the food is delicious and they provide plenty!). It wasn’t long before excitement rose again, as the children raced to choose what would be their bed for the week. Both teachers and students then had a nice early night, in preparation for the long days of activities that would follow.

On Tuesday morning, we set out on our first adventure… exploring Gua Tempurung cave! We followed the path through the cave until the highest point: from here there was only one way to go… down! Fears were overcome as we faced steep steps and darkness and made our way down a staircase which led to the underground river. Climbing and sliding through small holes and rocks, everyone made it out safely (and extremely wet!). After lunch, we toured the local area, discovering the local fruits and traditional homes.

For Wednesday and Thursday, we were split into 2 groups and on one day we did ‘Mountain School’ whereas on the other we had a day on the river. Group one donned their life jackets and wet shoes, then headed out to the river where everyone received lessons in river safety followed by some thrilling rafting! At the same time, Group 2 enjoyed the day at Mountain School. They experienced everything from low-ropes to zip-lining, the giant swing to the leap of faith, every child gave it their all and showed true courage in attempting all of the activities!

Friday morning finally came and it was time for home. With one final ride on the ‘limousines’, sixty-one tired children (and even more tired teachers) climbed aboard the coaches and headed back to Kuala Lumpur.

I think I can safely say everyone had an amazing trip, overcame fears and challenged themselves in not only the activities but also in the way that they lived, in the jungle, for the week. As we came out of the arrivals hall, everyone was happy to see families and looking forward to the prospect of home (and a shower!)  Once again, a FANTASTIC trip to Malaysia that I’m sure the children will never forget!
