Mr Simon Higham: Weekly Update 12/01/18

12 January 2018

A very Happy New Year to all of our BIS HCMC community and a welcome back to a new term of learning.

We would also like to extend a warm welcome to all of our new families who have joined our school this week and trust that your first week has been a very positive experience in terms of orientation and settling.

Following a short delay by the developer, we have decided to merge phases 2 and 3 together with the official start date for all Y1, F3 and Fundinotot children being Monday 22nd January.

This week, we have been focusing upon settling children back into school life and also preparing our whole school community for the opening of our new Early Years and Infant Campus. This is a milestone in our school’s history and not only marks the beginning of this new, innovative and exciting new campus but also the beginning of a new era for An Phu Primary campus. From Monday 22nd January, ‘AP1’ will be known as BIS HCMC, Junior Campus and we are very much looking forward to building upon the quality of learning experiences that we provide for all children.

We are also excited about receiving the Y6, Y5, Y4 and Y3 children from our Tu Xuong Primary campus and welcoming them all into the Junior Campus. Starting last term, we have been working hard with both children and parents to ensure that this transition is as smooth as possible and I would encourage all parents to support in this process too. The full schedule for the amalgamation of the two primary campuses are detailed below:

Spotlight on Learning: Teaching Never Stands Still

“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” ― Dr. Seuss

Read about how our teachers have been focusing upon the term ‘outstanding learning’ during the three non-pupil days last week in this post by Ms Ms Amy Murphy, Deputy Head Teacher Secondary Campus.

She writes, ‘Now more than ever, we need to encourage risk taking, creative thinking, embracing failure as part of learning, and independence in our students.’

TET Collection 2018 – we’re collecting now!

Tet Shoe Box Collection

Tết is the most important celebration in Vietnamese culture, honouring the arrival of spring. The celebration brings with it delicious food like bánh chưng, bánh dày, dưa hấu and traditional customs such as ancestor worship, wishing New Year's greetings and giving lucky money.

This year, we are doing the collection slightly differently to how we have before. The concept is that all of the children in our community partners will receive a Tet gift from us in the form of a shoe box, similar to the Christmas Shoe Box Appeals in the UK.

To find out more about how you can donate, please click on this post by The Community Team.

Safeguarding at school – it’s everyone’s responsibility

safeguarding poster

If, during your visit to school, you have any reason to be concerned about the safety of a young person, please contact the Designated Safeguarding Person.

Please note that CCTV cameras are in operation at all times across the campus.

Fundinotots is a friendly place to meet other parents with young children. We provide an informal play environment with opportunities to take part in a range of activities such as painting, soft play, sand pit, water play, storytelling, large play apparatus, library time and music sessions. Find out more on our Fundinotots information page.

Traffic Flow

It only takes one car to stop the traffic flow so please ensure that this stretch of road is used for drop off and pick up only. As always, your support in this matter is very much appreciated.

  • No cars should be parked for long periods of time outside of school – ask your driver to meet you at a convenient location away from the school gates and please ask them to never double park as this stops the flow of traffic at peak times.
  • Ask your driver to show respect to our guards and follow their instructions – they are there to keep you all safe and have a difficult job when drivers ignore their instructions.

Always remember to Stop, Drop and Go to keep the traffic flowing.

Coaches needed for Y2/3 and 4/5/6 & Administration Volunteers

We are still looking for more Parent Coaches for the Y2/3 and Y4/5/6 teams. For each year group we want to make small coach teams (with parent and student coaches) so we/you are more flexible in case of you have to travel/have other commitments. Don’t worry too much about experience, as you will work in a team. Let us know if you can run one session and/or help to run a session each week.

*Please remember children need to wear sports kit.

*Please remember all children need shin pads with football socks to protect their legs.

*Please remember they must bring a water bottle.

*Hat or cap is optional.

*You can buy Football socks from the BIS Uniform Shop, or any sports shop.

*For parents who are unable to stay throughout the whole training, would appreciate to arrive 10 minutes before your children's session ends to pick them.

*Please remind children if they are wearing football boots, they are not allowed in the basketball court and the playground area as their boots might damage the floor surfaces.
