At the British International School HCMC, all lessons are taught in English and we expect all children to have a reasonable standard of English when they join the school. However, we do offer some support to those children for whom English is not their first language.
The English as an Additional Language (EAL) department provides a specialist English language teaching service for students with identified EAL needs. This support enables them to fully access the curriculum and wider school life at BIS. The EAL programme is a partnership between school and home to create a language environment where students can maximise their progress and development. Our aims are:
- To build English confidence and competence inside and outside the classroom, so that students can fully access the curriculum and maximise their learning at BIS.
- To support the transition from basic interpersonal communication to academic proficiency in English.
In our Primary campuses, parents of children requiring this help will be consulted, but if the school decides that a child needs this extra help then it will be compulsory. This need is continually assessed and may be reduced during the school year. There is a charge for this additional provision, please contact the school office to receive an English as an Additional Language (EAL) brochure for further details.
In our Secondary campus, EAL support is also offered to students and is ongoing until the students are able to work independently in the mainstream classes. Individual or small group tuition is provided as necessary, primarily on a withdrawal basis, but also by means of in-class support. There is no additional charge for EAL in the Secondary School.
