Why choose the British International School, Ho Chi Minh City for your child’s Early Years education?
Play to Learn - Learn to Play
Children in the Early Years Foundation Stage learn by playing and exploring, being active and through creative and critical thinking. Each activity is adapted to suit your child’s unique needs and interests to provide them with a strong foundation for their education. We encourage your child to develop their imagination, to get actively involved in learning and to make decisions. Our timetables are set up to allow long periods of uninterrupted play since this is when we know children can explore concepts at a deeper level.
As your child moves into the Infant years they will continue to experience play based learning and, in addition, will be introduced to our more formal curriculum so that they can begin to understand their learning in more depth.
The EYFS Framework explains how and what your child will be learning to support their healthy development. Your child will be learning skills, acquiring new knowledge and demonstrating their understanding through 7 areas of learning and development.
The prime areas are:
- Communication and Language
- Physical Development
- Personal, Social and Emotional Development
As your child grows, the development of the prime areas will help them to develop skills in 4 specific areas. These are:
- Understanding of the World
- Expressive Arts and Design
Personalised Learning Environment
Personalised learning is at the heart of the British International School, Ho Chi Minh City. We treat your child as an individual by adapting to their personal learning preferences, strengths and areas for growth. We focus on how your child develops; we recognise that every child is different, but should be treated equally. Your child's teacher will plan personalised, engaging and inspiring learning experiences to allow your child to develop their interests and meet the curriculum objectives for their age.
A Purpose-Built Campus
Our Early Years and Infant Campus provides a warm and welcoming meeting point within our community, where you can gently introduce your child into the school environment. Within this purpose-built, child centred learning space, our youngest students will develop a strong foundation for lifelong learning, as they are encouraged to explore their new surroundings.
The campus invites imagination with innovative learning spaces including sensory walkways and crawling spaces. It allows children the freedom to grow independently with a cycle track, a splash pool, dedicated playgrounds and climbing apparatus. As they develop confidence in their surroundings, there are opportunities for them to use other facilities within the school with access to a large library, music rooms, a sports hall, a DREAMs Lab for ICT, DT and more, as well as a swimming pool.
Students are not cloistered into tiny classrooms and coerced into their learning, instead large, open spaces facilitate freedom of movement and more opportunities for children to explore activities designed to stimulate their personal, social and physical development.
Ian Battersby, Head Teacher, Early Years and Infant Campus
The entire building is designed to extend learning in all the prime and specific areas to encourage our youngest students to develop as independent learners. It signifies our commitment to providing a school environment that is nurturing, academically-stimulating and focused on developing the individual talents and strengths of each child.
Endorsing our commitment is the Right Honourable Lord Puttnam of Queensgate Kt CBE, who officially opened our Early Years and Infant Campus, with his remarkable observation that,
"This is the finest teaching and learning environment I have ever experienced at early years in my life and I’ve been around the world many many times." - Lord David Puttnam, November 2018
A Caring Educational Environment
Our Early Years and Infant Campus provides a nurturing and secure setting for your child to confidently explore and challenge themselves. We ensure that inside and outside spaces are safe, interesting and engaging. We support children working as a team to help them succeed.
In Early Years and Infants children need to learn about risks and safety, how to make good choices and how to respect boundaries. We make every attempt to provide full opportunity for your child to do their best and we achieve this by ensuring their physical and emotional needs are met during their time in our Early Years setting.
Our Highly Qualified Teachers
Our British-trained academic staff are committed to instilling a genuine love of learning within each child. At BIS HCMC this is achieved through the free use of art, craft, music and language in conjunction with the teaching of academics, so learning becomes a compelling creative process.
Each experienced teacher, supported by our dedicated team of teaching assistants, will create opportunities for your child to develop across all 7 areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework, offering open-ended learning and opportunities for child-initiated projects.
Our British-trained academic staff are committed to instilling a genuine love of learning within each child.
Teachers enhance play in the moment by adding resources, by joining in play and by modelling language. Our teachers take time to understand what your child is interested in and how children are playing together before joining. They also strive not to direct the play but to empower your child by letting them lead.
Our Parent-Teacher Relationship
At the British International School, Ho Chi Minh City, we recognise that you are the most important person in your child's life. We value the importance of effective communication and the sharing of your child's learning. We use an online learning journal called SeeSaw which is specifically designed to share progress in EYFS. Your child's teacher will update your journal weekly with photos, videos and notes allowing you to see the exciting things that your child is learning on a day-to-day basis.
We also invite you to take part in various activities throughout the year, including coffee mornings, celebrations, picnics, activity days and much more.
Our overall aim is to enhance the parent partnership which is so important during this phase of your child’s development.
A Foundation for Future Success
We recognise that in order for our students to achieve the world-class results that they do at IGCSE and IBDP in the secondary school, it is essential that the foundations for learning in the early years are secure and that personal progression is consistently monitored.
We therefore aim to provide our early years children with the academic knowledge and practical skills they need to become successful life-long learners, providing your child with a smooth transition from Early Years and Infants through to Primary and then Secondary level education.
