University Destinations 2021
The BIS Class of 2021 secured university places at prestigious universities around the world, with around 40% of our graduating students attending an institution ranked in the QS Top 50 Global Universities ranking for 2020.
In the UK, which was the most popular destination for the Class of 2021, BIS students took places at Imperial College London and University College London (UCL) which were both ranked in the QS Top 10, with others attending a range of prestigious Russell Group universities including Birmingham, Durham, Edinburgh, Liverpool, Manchester and King’s College London (KCL). Elsewhere in Europe, students gained places in Switzerland, Spain, Italy and the Netherlands.
The number of students attending universities and colleges in the USA was lower this year than previous, accounting for about 1 in 7 of our graduating students. The University of Washington and University of Wisconsin Madison were both ranked in the QS Top 100, while other students took places at Boston University and the University of Southern California. It is worth noting that, as with other cycles, many students received admission from prestigious institutions in the US but decided to pursue undergraduate study in other destinations; offers of admission were received by UCLA, UC Berkeley and New York University amongst others. Matriculations to Canada stayed at a similar level to the previous year with five students, and of those, four decided to enrol at the University of Toronto.
Singapore saw a considerable increase in university applications, with the majority of the 12% of students attending either the National University of Singapore or Nanyang Technological University, both of which are ranked in the QS Top 20. The level of South Korean applications and matriculations was maintained from previous years - around 1 in 8 of the Class of 2021 – with students taking places at prestigious institutions including KAIST, Seoul National University, Korea University and Yonsei University. Other students stayed in Asia to attend Hong Kong University in addition to institutions in Japan and Vietnam.
Australia is always a popular destination for BIS students and the Class of 2021 was no exception with around 11% of the Class of 2021 studying courses at the universities of Sydney, Melbourne, both in the QS Top 50 and Monash University which is in the QS Top 100. New Zealand was also a destination this year.
In terms of the academic subjects for undergraduate study, the Class of 2021 saw a wide range that included the perennial favourites of Medicine, Law, Engineering, Economics and Business. Additionally, BIS students are pursuing courses in Psychology, Biomedical Sciences, Computer Science, Fashion Design, Physics, Music and Animation amongst others. This diverse range of pathways is further evidence of the multitude of options available to IBDP students and a fine indication of the scope and range of the aspirations of our student body.
Our aim at the British International School, Ho Chi Minh City is to provide your child with both the academic knowledge and personal confidence to thrive in the higher education system and beyond, as described by Class of 2015 alumni Evan Planchon:
"Completing the IB Diploma truly enabled me to solidify my work-ethic, time-management skills and many more, which meant that I was ready to tackle university and my professional and personal life with the same mindset which proved to be successful so far. Having the chance to not only learn, but grow, in an international setting with outstanding facilities, staff and students was a privilege."
We are proud of what our students have gone on to achieve: from published poets to co-founders of award-winning social enterprises, each and every journey is unique. Find out more by reading our alumni success stories.
