Student Wellbeing

At the British International School Ho Chi Minh City, we believe a great education is one that balances academic outcomes, character development and student wellbeing, both in the classroom and learning virtually. By establishing a strong partnership between parents, teachers and students, our students can develop skills and dispositions to take responsibility for their own wellbeing to truly flourish.

Definition of wellbeing

  • Feeling good and functioning effectively
  • Having the skills to respond to challenges and setbacks
  • Having a positive sense of self, positive connection with others and with the wider world.

(H. Street, 2018)

These foundations of wellbeing are intrinsically valuable. By openly exploring and teaching wellbeing to our students, we’re able to develop our school’s culture and ethos to create an environment that ensures our students thrive academically, and beyond the classroom.

Our Wellbeing Curriculum gives our students access to a full range of activities and resources designed to keep their minds and bodies healthy, particularly while studying from home in a virtual school environment.

The curriculum was developed from the most up-to-date academic research working with world-leading schools in the field of positive education, and supports the growth of social and emotional competencies associated with greater health, wellbeing and better achievement.

It gives them social, physical and psychological empowerment, and the necessary tools to not only enjoy the great moments in life, but to also ‘bounce back’ in times of adversity.

The programme is underpinned by the work of Professor Martin Seligman’s “PERMAH model”, an approach to developing wellbeing which is built around the six key elements of positive emotions, engagement, relationships, meaning, accomplishment and health.
