Year 12 Expeditions

Students choose from 5 expedition options of varying length to suit their CAS experience development.

For students in Year 12 the most difficult aspect of their expedition is deciding which one to go on! The programme provides a variety of Creative, Active, and Service opportunities, and students can choose from the following:

Kon Tum, Vietnam - Service and Adventure Expedition

This amazing expedition engages students with two days of visits to four different orphanages in the area, where our students make posters, play balloon tennis, sing and play a long standing favourite, tug of war.  Students also trek through the scenic Vietnam countryside and visit the beautiful Kon Kotu homestay, enjoy local entertainment and experience the serenity that Kon Tum has to offer.

BIS HCMC Year 12 Expedition

“Although leaving the orphanages was always incredibly sad, it was also a great way to see how much we had grown attached to some kids in such a short period of time. I found at these moments it was a great time to reflect on how privileged we are.” – Amber Jarigsma, Class of 2019

The view and the weather on the trekking day was perfect, not too sunny, no rain; it was a little bit hard when we had to trek up the hill (but it wasn't that hard overall). I enjoyed the view and the whole experience of trekking. The orphanage visit was really fun as well. We got along with the kids and also participated in the activities with them, so it was great for me. Thu Nguyen, Class of 2019

Puerto Galera, Philippines - Diving Experience

Each year a team of students head off to the Philippines and return as qualified divers, either PADI Open Water or Advanced Open Water.  During this exciting week, the students also take time out to visit a local school and prepare activities and games for the young children.

BIS HCMC Year 12 Expedition

It is an extremely rewarding expedition, which develops the students’ in-school CAS project which raises awareness of the issues of marine debris and endangerment of sharks and rays for Project Aware.

My favourite moment had to be visiting the children in the school. Getting to the school was a journey in itself by travelling on a massive jeep and winding through the streets of Puerto Galera and seeing the people awed at our presence. But what made my day, was the excitement on the students' faces when they saw us. This was priceless and I would go back to visit them in a heartbeat. Julia Aafjes, Class of 2019

Chiang Rai, Thailand

This expedition is packed full of activities, games, team building challenges and visits to a variety of locations. Students visit minority villages and several social enterprise projects to learn about and generate questions relating to the complex interrelationships between global issues and their local impacts.

BIS HCMC Year 12 Expedition

The itinerary also crosses the Mekong into Laos for a night where students trek through the stunning forests, visit waterfalls and explore a huge cave system. This is the perfect expedition for those who want to be challenged mentally and physically!

It was really fun to work with other people, you learn a lot about you and your friends through the team activities. Also, some of the places like doi an khang were really beautiful and breath-taking. Khanh Minh Nguyen, Class of 2019

Tu Lan Caves, Vietnam

This activity focused expedition enables students to visit the world’s largest cave system for a unique experience. Students trek through and camp in the caves and surrounding countryside in one of the most stunning places in Vietnam. They are physically challenged through the caves, and engage in service activities in the local community. It really is an amazing experience that is truly memorable.

BIS HCMC Year 12 Expedition

“It was fun to climb and trek on rocky terrain. There was a sense of ‘danger’ which was thrilling and me and my friends constantly amaze ourselves after triumphing over a slippery steep climb. The natural scenery was also absolutely breathtaking, which made me feel very fortunate.” – Hong Hanh Pham, Class of 2019

Although I was aware of this before from the IA Bronze trip, I realised I am someone who loves serene atmosphere and the nature. The fact that this trip provided enough time for me to watch the stars, go swimming, etc that are not necessarily available in the city was what made this trip enjoyable. Ji Min Oh, Class of 2019

International Award, Vietnam

Students undertaking the International Award take part in their Final Expedition, which sees them planning their own route, cooking their own food, and finding their own beds for the night along the way!

BIS HCMC Year 12 Expedition

An action packed experience, this is for students who enjoy the outdoors and trekking through the beautiful countryside of Vietnam. This forms part of their overall qualification alongside their in-school projects.

Climbing up Bidoup mountain. It is over 2000m. The last day was the hardest because I was trekking with a stomach ache, but I survived.” Keminda Dassanayake, Class of 2019
