Community Service - Showing what we care

01 Tháng Hai 2016

It has been a busy time here at BIS with International week and community service.  The school showing again that we care about our community and helping our students gain confidence by following the characteristics in our Aide Memoir, providing not only excellent academic teaching but also a wonderful all round holistic development for our students.

Mr. Forster organized a secondary school history trip for our Year 9 students to visit the BVIS campus at Royal City on Tuesday. We saw a moving presentation by the Israeli ambassador set to music about the Holocaust in the Second World War, giving everyone the chance to reflect on the awful things that have happened in the past and how we should avoid wars and all the horrors that are associated with it.

Blue Dragon Children’s Foundation

Also on Tuesday Kim, an Australian volunteer from the Blue Dragon Children’s Foundation, came to visit our Year 8 students who have been learning about charity in Life Skills, in particular focusing on Global Citizenship from our Aide Memoire and the international organisations doing charity work with people who are in need here in Vietnam.

It was an emotional presentation that raised awareness of the plight of children who need help here in Hanoi. Blue Dragon is a volunteer organisation helping Vietnam's poorest children to escape poverty. They are working with street kids and children with disabilities who have no home or family and are sleeping rough on the streets. It really hit home with our students how lucky they are and how awful it must be to have no home, particularly with the rain and cold weather we are having at the moment in Hanoi.

Our Year 3 primary students also had two special visitors from Tam Dao Bear Sanctuary on Wednesday. Thank you to Ms. Hang and Ms. Ngoc who gave an enlightened talk on the characteristics and differences between the ‘Sun’ and ‘Moon’ bears. Our students demonstrated how eager they are to learn by enquiring as to why the bears are endangered here in Vietnam and how we can all become super heroes by helping raise awareness about these peaceful, beautiful creatures. Enquiry is another important characteristic in our Aide Memoir that we look for our students to aspire to.

Year 3 are looking forward to starting their young enterprise project and would like to raise funds for the Tam Dao Bear Sanctuary and have some fabulous merchandise to sell.

I hope everyone supports our primary students to help our community partner to help the bears so that they can be safe and be free. I know the children are all excited and looking forward to visiting the center later this year.

Everyone is very excited about the ‘Winter Carnival’ on Saturday. Some of the primary students are showing that they CARE about the environment and will be looking closely at food and farming. They have started planting and growing vegetables and herbs in the new BIS Community Garden. Others will also be looking at traditional Vietnamese medicine using herbs from the garden.
Some of our Year 6 students will be picking and selling produce on a stall at the ‘Winter Carnival’ on Saturday. Onions, lettuce, various mints and herbs will be picked fresh from the school garden just for you. Make sure you visit the stall, support the children and buy some fresh vegetables and herbs, safe in the knowledge that NO chemicals or herbicides have been used. They couldn’t be more delicious and all the money raised will go towards buying new seeds and plants for our students to re-plant in the community school garden.
